Greek monasteries

The greatest summer celebration of the Greek Orthodox Church today marks the dormition and passage to heaven of Virgin Mary or «Panagia» as the Greeks call the Mother of Christ.

Prompted by that, we present one of the most enchanting Greek monasteries and our personal favorite, the Monastery of Panagia Hozoviotissa, located in the beautiful islet of Amorgos.

An 11th-century structure built by Alexius Comnenus I, the monastery was created as an ode to the Grace of Panagia, known as the Virgin Mary, who is considered to
be the protector of the island. Her icon was believed to have arrived on an unmanned boat from Palestine.

A perfect blend of nature and the beauty of man’s creation, the monastery symbolizes man’s tribute to the Holy Mother. Built into the face of a cliff, it provides a breath-taking view of the sparkling blue waters of the Aegean Sea. It is with no doubt, the pride of Amorgos, with its pristine walls lined with portraits of saints and monks, the smell of incense and numerous little treasures.

It is also one of the most popular Greek monuments and a visit to Greece would be considered incomplete without a visit to the spiritual heaven that is the Hozoviotissa Monastery, for tourists interested in spirituality and simple vacationers alike.
