Independence Day

Today, we celebrate the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire, waged by the Greek revolutionaries between 1821 and 1830.

A pivotal chapter in Greek history and a piece in the puzzle of world history, the Greek Revolution eventually led to the establishment of an independent Greek state.

Moreover, the 25th of March marks a double holiday, as it also has a religious meaning!

The Greek Orthodox Church celebrates the Annunciation by archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that she should become the mother of Jesus Christ the Son of God. 25th March is exactly nine months before Christmas!

Celebrations take place all across Greece and the Greek diaspora, including parades and other
celebratory events on the same day or its eve. The largest event is the military parade in Athens on 25th March, while on the previous day, celebrations take place throughout the schools of the country.

In other municipalities parades of military divisions, students, clubs, etc. are held, as well as church services.

Also, it is a custom across the country on this day to eat crispy, fried Cod fish with garlic sauce (Bakaliaros skordalia), which is an excellent opportunity for outdoor get-togethers, enjoying the beautiful spring weather.
